About St. John North Shores Hospital: Harrison Twp.

** About **
St. John Hospital and Medical Center - North Shores Campus has served the community since 1925, and been a valued member of St. John Providence Health System since 1984. On November 1, 2010, the North Shores campus transitioned as follows:

Outpatient rehabilitation patients will continue to be seen at the North Shores campus until a new outpatient location opens in Harrison Township (more info below). In addition, a lab drawstation remains at the site. Hours for Lab are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. Outpatient Rehab is open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

All rehabilitation inpatients were transitioned to the new Cracchiolo Rehabilitation Center located at St. John Hospital and Medical Center.

The Emergency Department, Imaging, and all other services ceased on November 1.

In Spring of 2011, St. John Providence Health System will open a new outpatient facility at the corner of Metro Parkway and Crocker (former Sears location) with extended hours urgent care, X-ray, a lab drawstation, outpatient rehab, and a physician practice. More information will be provided as details are available.

North Shores will always be remembered for its family-like atmosphere and deep commitment to providing outstanding care for its patients. That patient focus will live on both in the new outpatient facility, and at the Cracchiolo Rehabilitation Center.

History Of St. John North Shores Hospital: Harrison Twp.

** History of North Shores **
The hospital in Harrison Township known as "North Shores" has a rich history of service to the community.

1925: Memorial Orthopedic Hospital, designed by Albert Kahn, opens to treat polio patients age six months to 14 years.

1950s: The occupancy rate of Memorial Orthopedic Hospital declines following the discovery of the Salk vaccine and the hospital closes in 1957.

1963: William Anderson purchases the hospital and opens it as an acute care general hospital, which does not obtain Blue Cross provider approval. Mr. Anderson sues Blue Cross Blue Shield and loses.

1966: Hospital is renamed Clinton Valley Hospital and gets Medicare approval. Census improves, but debt looms, leading to bankruptcy and closing in 1968.

1969: Young Israel Council of Metropolitan Detroit purchases the facility and opens it as the 96-bed, non-profit, acute care Harrison Community Hospital.

1970 through 1983: Harrison Community Hospital undergoes major renovation. A critical care unit is added (1975) and a physician builds an adjacent clinic (1983).

1983: Reimbursement changes force Harrison Community Hospital to entertain options for acquisition. St. John Health Corporation acquires the hospital in 1984.

1988: Hospital is renamed St. John Hospital - Macomb Center and converted to a specialty hospital, focusing on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Addiction Treatment, and Outpatient Surgical Services.

1999: Hospital’s name is changed to St. John North Shores Hospital. North Shores expands its rehabilitation program and receives a federal grant for state-of-the-art neurological equipment. The facility is recognized by Medicare and Consumer Reports as the top hospital for patient satisfaction in metro Detroit.

2009-2010: St. John Providence Health System decides to retire North Shores Hospital, moving inpatient rehab care to the new Cracchiolo Rehabilitation Center at St. John Hospital in November 2010. Outpatient services move to a site in Harrison Township in January 2011.
